چکیده
Acknowledgements The work presented in this thesis would not have been possible without the help and support of far more people than I can recognize in this space. First and foremost I would like to thank my family, especially my parents Lynn and Gene Edens, for all their guidance and continued support over the years. They have provided the foundation on which the person I am has been built. I owe a debt of gratitude to my high school physics teacher, Richard Taylor, for sparking my interest in physics and first setting me down the path that has led me to this point and the faculty of the physics department at Harvey Mudd College for nurturing and refining that interest. I would like to thank my collaborators on the experiments I performed, with special thanks to John Edwards and John Porter, for helping to provide me with the resources and knowledge I needed to complete my research. I would not have made it through graduate school without the help of the coworkers and friends that I have shared an office with for the better part of five years, Gilliss, Greg, and Will, who have unfailingly provided ideas when I've needed inspiration, hands when I've needed help, and friendship when I've needed support. Finally, I would like to thank my advisor, Todd Ditmire, who demonstrated an amazing ability to provide the resources and support necessary for an experiment enabling me to concentrate solely on the science of the experiment. Furthermore, he has been a constant input of energy and inspiration when my motivation was low or it did not seem like my efforts were bearing fruit and has provided knowledge and insight at every turn that has deepened my understanding of the physics I have studied. Supervisor: Todd Ditmire We have performed a series of experiments examining the properties of high Mach number blast waves. Preliminary experiments were conducted on the Janus laser at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory while the majority of experiments were carried out on the Z-Beamlet laser at Sandia National Laboratories. We created blast waves in the laboratory by using 10 J-1000 J laser pulses to illuminate millimeter scale solid targets immersed in gas. The experimental results can be grouped into three categories. Firstly, we confirmed the importance of line radiation on the evolution of the blast wave and that this importance increased with the atomic number of …

Experimental Investigation into the Hydrodynamics Effects of Slot Film Cooling on a Cylindrical Model
An experimental study of hydrodynamics of film cooling is performed by using a single longitudinal slot on a cylindrical model simulated to the leading edge of the gas turbine blade. The model is set up into the test section of an open-circuit induced flow wind tunnel which provides the main flow. The injected air, as a secondary film flow, produced from a high pressure compressor is considered...
متن کاملApplication of New Inflection Point Method for Hydrodynamics Study in Slurry Bubble Column Reactors
Bubble column reactors are used in a wide variety of applications such as multiphase bioreactors, catalytic slurry reactors, and absorption processes. The superficial gas velocity-gas holdup relationship and transition point are two important parameters for characterizing the hydrodynamics of a bubble column reactor. In this study, systematic investigation of a nitrogen - water - glass bead...
متن کاملCFD Modeling of TiO2 Nano-Agglomerates Hydrodynamics in a Conical Fluidized Bed Unit with Experimental Validation
In the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of gas-solids two phase flow, the effect of boundary conditions play an important role in predicting the hydrodynamic characteristics of fluidized beds. In this work, the hydrodynamics of conical fluidized bed containing dried TiO2 nano-agglomerates were studied both experimentally and computationally. The pressure drop ...
متن کاملStudy of Parameters Affecting Separation Bubble Size in High Speed Flows using k-ω Turbulence Model
Shock waves generated at different parts of vehicle interact with the boundary layer over the surface at high Mach flows. The adverse pressure gradient across strong shock wave causes the flow to separate and peak loads are generated at separation and reattachment points. The size of separation bubble in the shock boundary layer interaction flows depends on various parameters. Reynolds-averaged...
متن کاملCFD Simulation of Concap Tray Hydrodynamics
This research includes both experimental and CFD investigation in the hydrodynamic behavior of a new type of column tray introduced as “Concap” tray. The proposed column tray is used in contactor columns especially in stripping columns. The hydrodynamics of this Concap tray is investigated in a 1.2m in diameter column. Using air-water system, the experiments were performed for different liquid ...
متن کاملNumerical Simulation of Turbulent Subsonic Compressible Flow through Rectangular Microchannel
In this study, turbulent compressible gas flow in a rectangular micro-channel is numerically investigated. The gas flow assumed to be in the subsonic regime up to Mach number about 0.7. Five low and high Reynolds number RANS turbulence models are used for modeling the turbulent flow. Two types of mesh are generated depending on the employed turbulence model. The computations are performed for R...
